Minecraft Java vs. Bedrock Crossplay: Who Can Play Together
Minecraft Java vs. Bedrock crossplay explained: the two editions cannot play together, so compare devices, controls, Realms and creator content before choosing.
Checked against official Minecraft sources on October 11, 2026.
Minecraft Java vs. Bedrock comes down to who you want to play with: choose the same edition as your friends, because Mojang's official multiplayer system does not connect Java players with Bedrock players. Windows players have access to both through the PC bundle, but they still need to launch the appropriate edition for each group. Mojang's edition guide confirms that distinction.

Minecraft Java vs. Bedrock compatibility
Confirmed: Java multiplayer works with Java; Bedrock multiplayer works with Bedrock. The official PC store's comparison describes Java compatibility across Windows, Mac, and Linux, while Bedrock connects players across supported consoles, mobile devices, and Windows. Official comparison.
| Your situation | Edition to check | What it means for your group |
|---|---|---|
| Friends use Java on Windows, Mac, or Linux | Java | Stay within Java multiplayer |
| Friends play on consoles or mobile | Bedrock | Use Bedrock on your compatible device |
| You play on a Windows PC | Either, through the PC bundle | Ask friends before launching |
| You want the game listed as Minecraft for Windows | Bedrock | That name identifies the Windows Bedrock version |
All compatibility entries above come from the official PC store. Treat the edition as the first question, rather than assuming that two people who own a game called Minecraft can immediately share a session.
For example, a Windows player joining a friend on a Mac should check whether the friend is using Java. A Windows player joining a console group should check Bedrock instead. Those are practical applications of the compatibility rules, not promises about a particular server or account configuration.
How to choose your Minecraft edition
Start by asking your group for the edition name. A screenshot of the title screen or launcher entry can be more useful than a message saying only “PC Minecraft.” Windows supports both editions, so the device name alone does not settle the question. Official PC FAQ.
Use this planning checklist before buying anything:
- Ask each friend whether they play Java or Bedrock.
- Check whether your own device supports that edition using the official comparison.
- If you already own Minecraft on PC, sign into the launcher with the Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Install the edition your group uses, rather than selecting one based only on its name.
- Agree on your multiplayer destination before buying a hosting subscription.
The account and reinstallation steps follow the official PC store FAQ. The rest is our recommended decision process based on Mojang's edition compatibility rules.
If you have two separate groups, owning both editions on Windows gives you a way to join each group in its respective edition. It does not merge the groups into one official multiplayer session. Mojang explicitly tells players with access to both editions to switch according to which friends they want to join. Edition guide.
Minecraft controls and creator content
Confirmed: Bedrock includes controller and touch support, while the official PC FAQ says Java does not have native controller support. If your preferred way to play involves a controller, that is a useful difference to settle before installing. Official PC comparison.
Creator content also follows different routes. Mojang describes Java as supporting community-made mods, while Bedrock provides Minecraft Marketplace content and add-ons. Ask the group for the actual content they intend to use; “we want mods” is too vague to make a purchasing decision. Mojang's edition guide.
Our recommendation is to decide multiplayer compatibility first, then controls, then content. This order prevents you from choosing an edition for one attractive feature and discovering that your intended group uses the other one. It also gives the host a clear answer about which hosting product to investigate.
If the plan is to share one television, the official comparison lists split screen for console Bedrock, with up to four players. Java does not include that feature in the comparison. Local split screen and online crossplay answer different needs, so tell your group whether everyone will be in the same room. Official comparison.
Does Minecraft Realms connect Java and Bedrock?
No. The official Realms FAQ says a Java Realm accepts Java players, and a Bedrock Realm accepts Bedrock players. Paying for Realms does not remove the edition boundary. Realms FAQ.
Check the edition before selecting a plan. For the subscription differences, read our Minecraft Realms plan guide. If you are choosing between editions because of an older computer, our Minecraft PC requirements guide separates their hardware lists.
Console multiplayer also requires the relevant platform's online subscription, sold separately, according to the Realms page. Include that condition in your group's planning; a Realms subscription is not the entire access checklist for a console player. Official Realms conditions.
