Key Takeaways: Final Fantasy Resonance Characters, Roles and Visions
- Main party: Rain, Lasswell and Fina, with more allies such as Lid joining later.
- Six roles: Commando, Medic, Sentinel, Breaker, Synergist and Saboteur. Characters and Visions each have one.
- Visions are crystallized essences of characters. Each party member equips one, which gives stats, skills and magic.
- 26 Visions in total, including legacy heroes like Cloud, Terra, Lightning, Noctis, Zidane and Sephiroth.
- Resonances are cinematic Vision finishers. You trigger one by staggering every enemy.
Final Fantasy Resonance builds every party member from two layers: the character's own role, and the Vision equipped on them. A Vision adds stats, spells and skills, and abilities learned from it stay usable after you swap Visions. Square Enix describes the result as a more accessible take on the series' job system. The game, the first HD-2D Final Fantasy, is a rebuilt version of the first season of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. Square Enix lists an October 22, 2026 release.
Final Fantasy Resonance Characters
| Character | Voice (English / Japanese) | Who They Are |
|---|---|---|
| Rain | Clifford Chapin / Nobuhiko Okamoto | Protagonist. A Grandshelt knight who commands an airship squadron |
| Lasswell | Alejandro Saab / Yusuke Kobayashi | Rain's childhood friend and deputy commander, raised by Rain's family |
| Fina | Lizzie Freeman / Akane Fujita | A girl who appears from the Earth Crystal with no memories except her name. Uses white magic and archery and can talk to espers |
| Veritas of the Dark | Ian Sinclair / Akio Otsuka | The armored villain who shatters the Earth Crystal and attacks Grandshelt |
| ?????? | Corey Pettit / Inori Minase | A mysterious woman who travels with Bahamut and mainly uses offensive magic |
Character details come from Square Enix's June 2026 announcement. The story opens when Rain and Lasswell investigate the Earth Shrine, lose to Veritas of the Dark, and set out with Fina to protect the remaining Crystals.
Lid also joins the party later. The PlayStation Blog's hands-on describes her as a damage-dealing Commando.
Final Fantasy Resonance Roles Explained
The in-game tutorial lists six roles, as transcribed by FFResonance.wiki:
| Role | What It Does | Known Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Commando | Deals damage | Lid; Visions Terra and Shantotto |
| Medic | Heals the party | Fina; Vision Leah |
| Sentinel | Protects allies | Rain; Vision Warrior of Light |
| Breaker | Staggers enemies | Lasswell; Vision Cloud |
| Synergist | Buffs allies | Not yet named in official material |
| Saboteur | Disrupts and debuffs enemies | Vision Zidane |
Examples come from Square Enix's descriptions, the PlayStation Blog and the tutorial text. Matching roles is not required. The tutorial pairs Rain with Warrior of Light because both are Sentinels, but it also says to mix and match, for example by making a Medic who can attack.
How Visions Work
- Getting Visions. Story characters' Visions come from completing events involving them. Legacy Final Fantasy heroes come from vision crystal sanctums around the world, where you replay a short story from their game.
- Equipping. Each character holds one Vision at a time. It boosts base stats and unlocks its skills and magic in battle.
- Affinity and mastery. Winning battles with a Vision equipped earns mastery points and raises affinity, which unlocks more passives and abilities.
- Keeping abilities. Once learned, an ability can stay equipped under a different Vision, as long as it fits the cost limit. Square Enix names Dualcast and Spellblade Dual Wield as examples.
- Ranking up. Collect magicite and visit the Moogle of Light to raise a Vision's base rank and unlock more abilities, according to the PlayStation Blog.
Example Visions
| Vision | Origin | What It Brings |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior of Light | Final Fantasy | Earth, lightning and light attacks, abilities that protect allies |
| Terra | Final Fantasy VI | Commando with fire, water and ice magic |
| Cloud | Final Fantasy VII | Breaker with lightning and water attacks, critical damage abilities. Resonance: Ascension |
| Shantotto | Final Fantasy XI | Commando with lightning, water and dark magic |
| Y'shtola | Final Fantasy XIV | Fire and ice spells to stagger, healing, gets stronger the more kinds of magic she uses |
| Noctis | Final Fantasy XV | +20% attack, Thunder and Blizzard. Mastery adds +40% limit burst gauge per kill |
| Zidane | Final Fantasy IX | Saboteur with Steal, boosted by Mug |
| Charlotte | Brave Exvius | Square Enix calls her a durable Defender with ice and water attacks |
| Leah | Brave Exvius | Medic: recovery, defensive and status-curing magic |
| Tronn | Brave Exvius | Black mage with fire, ice and lightning and many stagger abilities |
The PlayStation Blog also names Sephiroth and Lightning among the 26 Visions. A September trailer showed that you can find and challenge Sephiroth to unlock a special reward.
Resonances, Stagger and Espers
- Stagger. Emptying the gauge under an enemy's HP bar staggers it: it skips its turn and its defense drops. Elemental weaknesses drain the gauge faster.
- Bonus phase. The character who causes a stagger gets an extra action at the end of the turn.
- Sweeping stagger. Stagger every enemy at once and the whole party gets bonus actions.
- Resonance. At the end of that bonus phase you can fire one Vision-specific finisher. Depending on the Vision, it deals heavy damage, hits a wide area or buffs the party.
- Espers. Summons such as Siren and Ramuh, unlocked through the story and side quests. They fight for three turns, end with a finishing move and cost a lot of MP.
Example Builds From the PlayStation Blog
- Lasswell (Breaker) + Leah (Medic): healing magic and the option to pass his turn to an ally, a sturdy backup support.
- Lasswell + Cloud (Breaker): more offense for staggering.
- Lid (Commando) + Zidane (Saboteur): damage plus debuffs and disruption.
