Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer is live with the map and mode set Infinity Ward and Activision confirmed ahead of launch. This guide sticks to callofduty.com posts: the October 21 Maps & Modes blog, the October 22 launch patch notes, and the October 23 live-worldwide post.
For release timing and platforms, see the Modern Warfare 4 release page. Campaign walkthrough notes live in the campaign missions guide. Extraction play is covered in the DMZ Hajin guide.
How Many Multiplayer Maps at Launch
The launch patch notes and live-worldwide blog both state 20 Multiplayer maps on day one:

- 4 Gunfight maps (2v2)
- Kill Block (modular; 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight at launch)
Shipment is listed as a post-launch Core 6v6 map for October 27, so it is not in the day-one 20.

- Munition
- Nautical

Shipment (Post-Launch)
Shipment returns on October 27 on a Russian harbor layout. Activision describes a classic Shipment footprint with Modern Warfare 4 visuals and gameplay updates. It is not part of the launch-day 20-map count.
Ground War Maps (32v32)
- Imjin Farmland
- Wolves Stadium
- Forest
These sit in the Hajin-area Ground War set described on the Maps & Modes blog (farmland, stadium urban core, and the wooded hillside between them).
Gunfight Maps (2v2)
- Cafe
- Library
- NYC
- Smuggler
Kill Block
Kill Block is the Westbridge Training Facility: a modular Multiplayer battleground that reconfigures between rounds. Activision cites more than 500 combinations.
Some slabs are new; others draw inspiration from Modern Warfare locations such as Crash, Highrise, and Shoot House, placed in randomized layouts.
At launch, Kill Block supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight. Launch patch notes add that 6v6 support and new slabs/configurations arrive post-launch.
New Modes at Launch
Inflation
Respawn mode (Core and Hardcore). Eliminate enemies and collect cash. Carrying more wealth raises your profile; players who hit the High Value Target threshold are revealed to both sides. Eliminated players drop part of their cash. Overtime in the final minutes increases cash multipliers. The team with the most cash wins.
Official timing: 10 minutes; party size 1–6.
Hijack
Respawn mode (Core and Hardcore). Teams fight over a single Data Spike that can be carried, thrown, or passed toward the enemy Comm Station. Planting starts score-over-time; finishing the upload earns a bonus if the plant is defended. Sides swap between rounds. Match time: 4 minutes per round; score limit 300; party size 1–6.
Collateral
Round-based tactical mode (Core). Blends Search & Destroy with a Buy Phase. Everyone starts with a pistol and $800, earns cash from objectives and eliminations, then spends between rounds. No respawns and no custom loadouts in-round; cash carries if you die. First team to six rounds wins. Match time: 2 minutes per round; party size 1–6.
Combat Outpost
Alternate Ground War mode (Core). Large-scale Domination-style fight: capture Outposts for points and spawn expansion, then reinforce them for team rewards (examples named by Activision include Local UAV coverage, a JLTV airdrop, and a Light Tank to Headquarters). Match time: 20 minutes; score limit 1500; party size 4 in a 32v32 match.
Returning Modes and Hardcore
Launch also includes returning modes named in the Maps & Modes blog and patch notes:
- Team Deathmatch
- Domination
- Hardpoint
- Kill Confirmed
- Free-For-All
- Frontline
- Search & Destroy
- Gunfight
- Gun Game
Many of these ship with Core and Hardcore variants where noted on the official mode list.
Hardcore rules, per Activision: limited HUD, friendly fire, and reduced health with no regeneration.
Proving Grounds is the dedicated mobility/combat training space (tutorials and timed courses) available at launch.
Pre-Season 1 / Halloween Modes
Before Season 1, Activision lists two extras arriving “next week” for Halloween:
- Possession (new): eliminate a player to possess them and take their loadout, then play objective-style beats such as Hardpoint or Search & Destroy sites.
- Infected (returning): Survivors vs Infected; infections spread on eliminations.
Exact playlist naming and start times for those modes were not published in the Maps & Modes blog or launch patch notes checked for this guide.
Playlists: What Activision Has (and Has Not) Published
Activision has not published a named launch Quick Play playlist list on callofduty.com. The Maps & Modes blog and launch patch notes document maps, modes, and Core / Hardcore / Alternate variants. They do not ship a table of Quick Play playlist display names.
In practice, “playlists” at launch means the mode and variant set above (plus whatever the in-game lobby surfaces day one). If Activision posts an official named playlist breakdown later, that list should come from callofduty.com, not from third-party speculation.
